Affirmations is a very interesting technique I read in Scott Adams' "Dilbert Future". The basis of it is the following:
You think of a specific goal you want to acieve, one that you can visualize (preferably).
Write it down fifteen times in a row, once a day using the form:
I, ALEX ARMSTRONG, WILL GET/DO/ACCOMPLISH WHATEVER.
There's no set time to expect results, but if I did it for siz months without any movement towards the objective, I'd assume it doesn't work and I'd stop.
I don't think it matters how many times you write it, if you have multiple goals, if you forget to write it for a week, or if you type it instead of writting. I don't have any reason to believe the method is so fragile that these things matter.
I don't think you need faith in the affirmations in order for the process to work, any more than you need faith to steer you car. I'm fairly certain you would get the same results if you wrote the affirmations while thinking the whole thing is a load of crap. Be as skeptical as you like.
Okay, you might think this is the most stupid thing you've ever heard in your life... I say try it out and see what happens. Scott Adam's says it worked for him. I have a friend who tried it and said it worked for her. My personal experience with affirmations is very small but the results have been incredible. Be prepared to be surprised, though.
I remember that I wrote I, ALEX ARMSTRONG, WANT TO LEARN SOME GUY'S SECRETS (more or less - I had written it in my mother tongue - this is just a quick translation) and I expected that this guy would come and tell me a few days later when we would go out. Well, it didn't happen like that. The first day that I started writting the affirmation a friend of this guy came to me and we talked about various things and learned more about that person that I could have imagined.
I have a question about affirmations, though that no one has been able to answer... What if I asked to get rich. One way is that I win the lottery. Another is that a relative dies and leaves me money. I don't really want any of my relatives to die! How can I control my affirmations? This has gotten me very skeptical about affirmations and the problems it can cause.
Try this out and please e-mail me with your experiences!
